In response to the Haitian earthquake, staff at eircom and Meteor have donated €35,000 for Concern Ireland on behalf of the victims of the recent disaster.
Staff located throughout the country including locations in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Sligo, Limerick, Waterford, Portlaoise, Drogheda, and Athlone, made the donations through local collection buckets and directly online with the Concern Ireland website. The Company committed to match all staff donations, bringing the total raised to a substantial €70,000.
The funds will go to specific projects to help in the reconstruction of Haiti. As part of the relief effort, Concern teams are identifying projects that will have medium and longer term benefit for the people of Haiti.
Separately, Concern Ireland collection buckets have also been in place in the 39 Meteor retail outlets across Ireland. The total from those public donations has not been finalised.
Paul Donovan, CEO eircom Group said, “The response from our staff to this appeal has been phenomenal right the way across the country. The Company is proud to match the funds raised. It is a real statement about the willingness of our employees to help and underlines how corporate citizenship can involve all parts of the organisation.”
Expressing his gratitude, Tom Arnold, Chief Executive, Concern Worldwide, said “The response of eircom and Meteor staff to Concern’s Haiti appeal has been absolutely incredible. Their generosity, coupled with eircom’s corporate matching donation, can achieve so much in Haiti, in the wake of the devastating earthquake. This donation will be used not only in the short to medium term to aid our emergency response targeting 150,000 people with ongoing relief within 6 months, but also, in the longer term, to help Concern to rebuild the lives of people affected by this tragedy. The speedy and generous response of companies like eircom/Meteor enables us to react quickly and effectively to emergencies of this nature and I would like to send each and every staff member heartfelt thanks on behalf of both myself, our team on the ground in Haiti and our support staff in Ireland.”
